Previously called GO Early Stages Multi-Sport Summer Camp in 2016 and 2017, this program just completed it's 3rd year this last summer but under a new name Play Sports Alberta. In 2016, the programs first year, Volleyball Alberta and Basketball Alberta partnered together. In 2017, after a successful first year with two sports included, Alberta Soccer Association joined the partnership allowing us to offer volleyball, basketball, and soccer in the 2017 multi-sport program. After positive feedback, we are continued in 2018 with the multi-sport format including volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Additionally in 2018 we also offered sessions with Ortona Gymnastics Club and Athletics Alberta for an even more diverse camp experience.
In 2019 the two core sports offered are volleyball & basketball with 2x a week sessions in Soccer and Athletics and Gymanstics.
6-8 years old Curriculum focus
This introductory camp focuses on the core fundamental movement skills basketball, soccer and volleyball through FUN developmentally appropriate games and activities. This camp emphasizes the importance of being "physically literate" to engage in a wide variety of physical activities in life. The curriculum will be based on the Steve Nash Basketball, Mini-volley and the Canadian Soccer LTPD toolkits. Children will learn FMS such as running, throwing, catching, and jumping which all are transferred over to a number of sports.
9-12 years olds Curriculum focus
This camp is aligned with the Long Term Athlete Development Stage 2 "Learning to Train" that stresses, FUN, FAIRPLAY and PARTICIPATION. The camp will be divided between basketball and volleyball as the camps core sports, with soccer, athletics and gymnastics being adding in through the week. The volleyball curriculum will follow Volleyball Canada's Atomic Volleyball program focusing on increased number of ball contacts per player, creating longer rallies and developing proper skill delivery. Atomic participants will learn the basics of volleyball: forearm and overhand passing, hitting, serving and basic team movement and sportsmanship. The basketball curriculum will follow the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program which focuses on developing basketball skills, sportsmanship as well as a love for the game. Skills that will be focused on are dribbling, shooting, passing, footwork and rebounding. Some modified team concepts will also be taught. The soccer curriculum will be drawn from the Canadian Soccer LTPD toolkits and stages.
Athletics Curriculum Focus
The Mini Legends Program teaches is comprised of fundamental movement skills such as Running, Jumping and Throwing! The program offers 7 developmental levels including general play skills, activities, and games that contribute to the development of Agility,Balance, Strength, and Coordination in a fun and interactive environment. The program was Organized into both skill development stations and fun competitions/games where the MLP’s can test participant skills allowing them to find success and confidence.
