Selection

Selection Process

Volleyball Alberta follows a structured and transparent process to select athletes and coaches for all high‑performance programs, including Team Alberta Indoor, Team Alberta Beach, and Team Alberta North.

The goal is simple: identify and support individuals who are ready to train, compete, and represent Alberta at a high level.

Athlete Eligibility

To be considered for selection, athletes must:

  • Meet the age and program requirements
  • Be a member in good standing with Volleyball Alberta and Volleyball Canada
  • Agree to follow all Volleyball Alberta policies and expectations
  • Commit fully to training and competition schedules

Once selected, athletes are expected to train and perform at a level consistent with the program’s standards.

How Athletes Are Identified

Athletes may be evaluated through multiple pathways:

  • Identification camps
  • Performance at Volleyball Alberta events
  • Physical testing
  • Program registrations (e.g., GMTM, Sportlomo)

Athletes invited to tryouts will be contacted directly. In some cases, tryout numbers may be limited based on capacity.

How Selections Are Made

All selections are made by an appointed Selection Committee.

Athletes are assessed based on:

  • Technical and tactical skill
  • Athletic ability
  • Future potential
  • Character (leadership, work ethic, coachability, attitude)

Committees evaluate athletes by position, compare performance, and finalize team rosters through a structured decision‑making process.

Special Considerations

  • Athletes unable to attend tryouts due to injury or illness may still be considered with appropriate documentation
  • Athletes training with Volleyball Canada or other approved programs may remain eligible
  • In some cases, athletes may be considered to play up an age group, if it is in their best interest

Alternate Athletes

Some athletes may be selected as alternates. These athletes:

  • May train with the team
  • Can be called upon if a rostered athlete is unavailable
  • Must be prepared to step into competition when needed

Coach Selection

Coaches are selected through a separate Coach Selection Committee.

Selection is based on:

  • Experience and coaching background
  • NCCP certification and development
  • Technical and tactical knowledge
  • Communication and leadership ability
  • Commitment to athlete development and program expectations

Fairness & Accountability

Selection Committees must be composed to ensure fair and objective decision‑making. All committees:

  • Must be free from actual or perceived conflicts of interest
  • Follow established evaluation processes
  • Act in the best interest of both athletes and the program
  • Include a minimum of three members.
  • For Athlete selection, at least two non-coaching members (who are not coaches of the team being selected)
